Using the correct terms in your writing

My Confirmation report is very close to be completed. I've got 84 pages (including everything) and 124 references in the report. (Too long as a confirmation report...😱 ). At the moment I'm just really working on the final finish up, which is to fix some of the terms.

Using the right terms in your writing is extremely important. Keeping it consistent in the whole document is the difficult part. 😩

Eg:

Procedure --> Methodology
Factors --> Impact

I've also used "impact" in other section meaning slightly different thing so I've changed "impact" to "influence" to differentiate it.

If you know your topic well then you would know which word would be more suited. Fixing the writing to keep it consistent can be time consuming but is necessary.

I often forget about some of the writing in the diagrams. Luckily I saw one mistake in one figure and I've decided to check all of them! 😁

Confirmation of Candidature

I'm having my confirmation seminar on 7th of July. Since February this year, I've been preparing for this seminar. COC is something that all PhD students go through (well at least in Aus) so here's what needs to be done to complete it.

Confirmation seminar:
You will have 4 x panel members to see if your research can be done and is good enough for PhD. If you have been working closely with your supervisors, you should not be worried too much.
You will discuss with your supervisors when it can be done (date and time).
Once you know who your panel members are, when the seminar will be held and have your abstract ready, then you will email your faculty so that they can book a room for the seminar.
Don't forget to email all the details of your seminar to your faculty so that they can also advertise it within the faculty.

COC report:
For me, it was 50 page max.
The report should have
Abstract
TOC
Introduction
Literature review
Methodology
Timeline (including what has been done and what needs to be done)
and Conclusion.

COC presentation:
General PowerPoint slides are fine. Speaking in front of 4 panel members and some students, you will feel NERVOUS. In Japan, people say "just think that all the people that are looking at you are pumpkins" if you're presenting something and you feel really nervous. I try this method everytime and it seems to work for me!
